From a distance, Liberty seems to be a graceful dream - a realm of
unlimited possibilities. Up close, though, we find a foundation more solid than
the earth itself - a strength so deeply rooted that it could, with ease, lift
up the whole world |

Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco,
California From its completion in 1937 until 1964, the Golden Gate was
the world's longest suspension bridge. When our kids walked its length in the
fog in 1993, we couldn't interest them in statistics. They just marveled at
playing inside a cloud. |

Pow Wow
Phoenix, Arizona Pow wows are drums and feasting and dancing - a
whirl of color and the singing of ancient songs. Pow wows remind us of the
power and richness of cultures that existed long before there was such a thing
as America. |

Rider Taos High Road, New Mexico Start with an
American basic (like a big car). Slowly add the culture of one of the myriad
ethnic groups who have made America home. As it cooks and blends, our melting
pot land provides the best America has to offer. And that is the real
America. |

Water wars, land wars, culture wars - the Saguaro, silent sentinel, has seen it

1976, protesting the taxes his heirs would owe on the value of his paintings
upon his demise, Ted DeGrazia took his images of the people of the southwest
out to the desert and burned them. Although Americans appreciate art, nothing
says "American Legend" like a tax protest. |

I-40 routed traffic away from the small communities between Kingman, Arizona
and Flagstaff (two names we remember from the song), Route 66 was the Mother
Road. Nostalgia and tourism now provide the only hope these small towns have as
they try to redefine their future. |

Casino Las Vegas,
Nevada I approach the black-leather couple with both courage and
camera, pointing to the chrome on their Harley. "May I?" They look, and
suddenly they are huge smiles. "It is beautiful!" they exclaim in thick French
accents, foreign tourists grabbing a piece of the American dream. |

Every time I visit Wupatki, I listen to the stories its ancient walls have to
tell - stories of a time before there was time. In these modern days, are we
building stories into the walls we erect? And for how many years will those
stories continue to sing? |

Woods Woodburne, New York Before the Catskill
Mountains became a performing Mecca for the likes of Sid Caesar and Lenny
Bruce, its meadows and woods harkened to the Mecca of old. In this beautiful
place, refugees from the pogroms of Eastern Europe found a home where they
could finally worship their God in peace. |
